Less sludge and more death metal, anchored in a progressive metal framework, with even more hilarious lyrics about slugs than ever before, what we have on Esoteric Malacology is Slugdge at the peak of their songwriting powers. Is this gimmicky? Sure it is, but much like Nekrogoblikon play amazing melodic death metal with a fixation on goblins and bears, Slugdge do the same here with an angrier, progressive death metal lens to express the joys as well as sorrows of the world of slugs. Heavy as hell, quite varied from song to song, and full of compelling riff craft and surprises, do not sleep on this one.

There are certain elements in music that immidately make me go "nope" and stop the playback. One of those is the drum machine. It was only the sight of the band photo which reveals this is a one-man project that made me stick around and give it a chance. And boy am I glad I did! Surely enough, the riffs tore me a new one and now I can certainly say that this kicks some speedy ass.

Fans were definitely saddened by the departure of former frontman Chance and thought, "Skeletonwitch will never be the same." This album is a far cry from, say, Beyond the Permafrost, but you know what? Change is good!!! New frontman Adam is coming into his own here and this album is beautifully sinister, dynamic, powerful, and features lengthier songs and elements outside Skeletonwitch's norm, like softer interludes and slower tempos. This is Skeletonwitch evolved & I love it!!!!
